St Matthew’s aims to be an Act 2 Church, valuing Awe, Unity, Generosity, Hospitality and Growth.

 

Three of the core values were established as priorities on the Planning Day, which these Aims and Actions will support; Unity, Prayer and Pastoral Care

 

1                 Unity

·        Background – St Matthew’s feels like several churches which use the same building rather than one church.  The biblical vision for unity of highly individual parts which are one because they belong to a greater whole.

·        Aims – To strengthen a common sense of identity at St. Matthew’s

  To build unity in Christ, not uniformity

·        Actions

Appoint Unity Co-ordinator

Combined services twice a year

A Program of social events to be designed for the coming twelve months, to include shared meals, weekends away, trips to Spring Harvest, New Wine etc

Broader representation on PCC

Re-structure of Church Council to ensure representation for all MAP aims

Conduct survey of church to establish areas to be worked on

 

2                 Prayer

·        Aims – Prayer at St Matthew’s should cover strategic issues including those in the MAP

Corporate prayer to be stimulated in services and home groups

Personal prayer to be encouraged by workshops and by example

To build up the healing ministry

·        Actions

Appoint Prayer Co-ordinator

Prayer to feature in Prayer News, News Sheet, website etc

Renewal of healing ministry team through training, regular meeting and leadership

Hold Healing Service twice a year

 

3                 Pastoral Care

·        Aims – To ensure that nobody gets lost

To ensure that all are welcomed and cared for

·        Actions

Appoint leader for Welcoming team, to ensure the welcome to St Matthew’s is effective

Implement procedures for follow up of bereavement, baptism and wedding families

Appoint leader for Pastoral Care Team

Encourage, train and support home group leaders.

 

4                 Youth/children/Blue Coat

·        Aims – To be a church where young people flourish as an active part of a community of all ages.

 

·        Actions

Build on the success of Messy Church and children's club and link in with other church events

Meet with the Youth Team to ascertain goals for the coming twelve months, financially, prayerfully and practically

Support the Crèche and Children’s workers

Establish a formal link with schools in Walsall town

Retain focus of 6.30pm service

 

5                 Worship

·        Aims –To Glorify God by offering the highest quality of worship we can in which people find a living encounter with God

·        Actions

More use of digital technology – less paper

Continuation of all services as long as there is reasonable demand

Encourage lay participation in leading, sharing and prayer – training, support, coaching and mentoring

To include space and time for reflection, testimonies and news ways of worship in services

 

6                 Reordering

·        Aims – To create a building to facilitate worship for 21st century and to enhance St Matthew’s ancient heritage

·        Actions

Appoint Project Leader

Time plan to be set

Consultation period to start

 

7                 Witness

·        Aims – To make Christ known in Walsall

·        Actions

Appoint Witness co-ordinator

Develop opportunities for witness through All Age Worship

Retain commitment to Back to Church Sunday

Retain commitment to Alpha

Open Church on Saturdays

Participate in cross Walsall events such as Good Friday March, Party in the Park

Develop interaction with St Matthew’s Centre user groups

Commit to All Age Worship development

 

8                 Promotion of St Matthew’s

·        Aims – To make our church building as attractive and impressive as possible

To reconnect with the community

To re-establish our presence as the Borough Church for Walsall

To be known for our worthwhile qualities, including our welcome, our diversity, our meeting of people’s needs, our passion for God and especially the sense that “The Lord is here”

·        Actions

Appoint Church Manager

Retain Civic Sunday etc and own it together

More public events in Church

Maintain and keep website up to date

Forge relationships with local businesses


Next 12 months

Appoint ‘co-ordinators/leaders’ for each area of responsibility

St Matthew's aims to be an Acts 2 Church, valuing Awe, Unity, Generosity, Hospitality and Growth.

This MAP is intended to help us to show God's love and to be a vibrant, lively, growing church for all ages and backgrounds. Six areas were identified for development: Prayer, Unity, Pastoral Care, Promotion of St Matthew’s, Youth / Children / Blue Coat, and Worship.
