What's Church and Christianity about?
... more about Church and Christianity
First steps in faith are much like learning to ride a bicycle. You don't learn to ride by reading books or listening to talks or watching bicycle races. You have to sit on the seat and pedal to have any chance of learning - and fall off from time to time!

God and church and Jesus and prayer and worship and lots more - are all connected. Like riding bikes, you don't have to understand everything or even get it completely right before starting. The best way to find the power of faith in your life is to phone Colin or Liz and ask for something that's right for you.

Adults often find the alpha course really useful: we meet on a weekday evening, often in a pub with a meal and a pint, and discuss or question what faith means.

Some people approach church for a particular reason - a baptism or wedding or funeral, for example - or for a special service like remembrance or Christmas. Others find quiet time spent in church really useful for sorting out what's really important in life. Many feel drawn to singing and through it, they are able to use the words to express what they want to say. Some come while visiting friends or relatives.
A great introduction to Jesus and how he affects people today (as he has throughout history) can be found on the ReJesus website.

A huge range of services and activities take place in and around St Matthew's; looking at the Church calendar will give you a good idea about what goes on. To begin to get to know a few people, Colin Gibson is the Rector and the Who's who page should help. Some visitors have an interest in the history of St Matthew's Church, particularly if they are tracing their family tree.

St Matthew's belongs to the people it serves and particularly to visitors, so all at St Matthew's encourage you to explore and enjoy our place of worship.

Whatever your reasons for visiting, you will always find a welcome at St Matthew's.
